What Is Tallow?
Tallow is a bioavailable fat made from grass fed local beef suet here in Northland. It is carefully hand-rendered and filtered through multiple processes before it reaches maximum purity, making it suitable to be used as a cosmetic grade ingredient.
Why you will love Tallow
- Rich in vitamins A, D, E and K which supports skin repair and regeneration.
- Helps to soothe dry, sensitive or irritated skin promoting a healthy barrier. (Can help minimise and keep skin conditions at bay)
- Absorbs easily, blending perfectly with the natural oils your skin naturally produces.
- Gentle and safe for sensitive skin, including babies.
- Naturally locks in moisture.
- Closely mimics the skins natural sebum allowing for deep nourishment and absorption.
- Melts instantly on skin contact leaving you feeling silky smooth.
Tallow has been used for centuries for various purposes demonstrating its versatility and effectiveness across generations.
Does Tallow Smell?
Yes, tallow is beef fat in its purest form, so even after meticulous rendering and purifying there will always be a faint earthy scent to it, similar to ghee (clarified butter). However upon application it dissipates quickly as it melts into the skin. If you are worried, we recommend choosing one of our botanical-infused or essential oil blends.
Do You Use Preservatives?
Our raw tallow balms are oil-based and completely shelf-stable on their own. For products containing water-soluble elements, we use Eco-certified compounds approved for use in organic skincare. This low-tox system protects against mold and bacteria, keeping your cream stable and safe while strictly aligning with our clean standards.
Are Your Products Suitable for Highly Sensitive Skin?
We focus on minimal, clean ingredients that naturally soothe and protect those with high skin sensitivity. Because everyone’s skin is unique, we always recommend reviewing the ingredient list on each product page and performing a quick patch test before use to ensure complete compatibility.
Is It Sustainable and Ethical?
Absolutely. Our tallow represents the very essence of sustainable, circular beauty. Beef suet is a natural byproduct of the meat industry. If it is not utilized for skincare, it is typically discarded as waste.
By reclaiming this rich resource, we are actively supporting the nose-to-tail philosophy. A way of returning to tradition, honouring the life that sustains us. We take this commitment a step further by sourcing directly from BlackSilver Wagyu, a local family-run farm dedicated to ethical, regenerative agriculture. This provides you with total transparency and traceability from pasture to jar. Choosing tallow means embracing a zero-waste, low-tox alternative to synthetic, lab-engineered skincare that relies heavily on chemical processing and industrial manufacturing.
How Should I Store My Balm?
To preserve the integrity of our balms, store your product in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight. Because we work with completely unrefined, natural fats, you may notice slight variations in texture as temperatures shift. This is a natural characteristic of raw skincare, and the benefits remain effective.
